Tenerife - Island Hopping Gateway To The Canaries

Tenerife is the biggest and most popular of the Canary Islands with thousands of visitors every year. Most people don’t realise that many of the other islands can be visited from Tenerife by air and sea which means it is a great base to do some island hopping.

If your are planning to head off to the southern resorts of Tenerife such as Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos why not divert to the port instead where you can take a trip to one of the nearby islands on the frequent and inexpensive ferry or catamaran services.

Naviera Armas (www.navieraarmas.com) operates large car ferries to La Gomera, El Hierro or La Palma.

A high speed catamaran service connects the Gomeran ports of Valle Gran Ray, Puerto Santiago and San Sebastian to Los Cristianos on Tenerife. This is run by Fred Olsen lines (www.fredolsen.es/PublicSite/FredOlsenExpress) who also have a route to La Palma (2hrs) on one of their larger vessels.

Alternatively, if you take a cheap bus ride from the airport to Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the north of the island (60 minutes) you can hop on a Naviera Armas ferry to Gran Canaria, Fuertoventura, Lanzarote, La Palma, El Hierro or even Madiera and Portugal. Fred Olsen runs a catamaran service to Gran Canaria from this port.

Imagine the sub-tropical rainforests of La Gomera, the magnificent Cumbre Vieja of La Palma. These are a ferry journey away from Tenerife where you can enjoy the more hedonistic pleasures that are on offer in Playa de Las Americas. Or, why not visit the moonscapes of Lanzarote? It’s easy by air or sea.

Dolphins, Pilot whales are just some of the wildlife you may spot when travelling between the islands. And don’t forget to take a camera as some of the scenery is spectacular. On Tenerife, Mount Teide rises to 16,000ft above sea level and is often snow capped during the winter months.

For those amoungst you who suffer from the dreaded sea-sickness there is another way to explore the islands. Binter Canarias (www.bintercanarias.com) operate inter-island flights and in minutes you can hop from one island to the next.
